FAQs
Learn how Petal works, what to expect, and find answers about safety, usage, privacy, and membership.
How Petal works
- Petal uses eight low-power bio-impedance (BIA) sensors- the same gentle, safe technology found in high-end smart scales.
- The sensors read your body's natural electrical signals to understand what's happening beneath the surface. They're non-intrusive, emit no ionizing radiation, and are safe for everyday wear.
- Because Petal sits close to your heart and chest, it captures readings right at the source - not from a distant spot like your finger or wrist.
- Petal is a wearable designed around women's bodies.
- Petal's unique form factor is comfortable and fully discreet, invisible to everyone but you.
- Petal measures close to your heart and chest, right at the source, rather than at a distant extremity like a finger or wrist.
- No. We recommend wearing Petal while you're awake- for most women, that's the time of day they already wear a bra.
Safety
- No. Petal is a wellness device designed to help you understand your body- it is not a medical device, and it does not replace emergency medical care or advice from a healthcare professional.
- This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
- No. Petal has no Wi-Fi or cellular radios. It uses only low-power sensing technology and safely uses Bluetooth® Low Energy to communicate with the Petal Wellness™ mobile app, and it emits no ionizing radiation.
- Yes. Petal uses Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE)- the same trusted, very low-power wireless standard found in everyday devices like headphones and fitness trackers.
- Petal operates at a fraction of the power level of a typical smartwatch.
Is Petal right for me?
- Petal is designed for comfort using premium, skin-friendly materials. Its soft European-knit fabrics and polyurethane-coated interiors meet the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, meaning they have been tested for harmful substances and are considered safe for prolonged skin contact.
- Petal's sensors are made from a soft, latex-free synthetic rubber.
- If you have a sensitivity to plastics, please note that Petal does include plastics that may come in contact with your skin.
- Yes. Follow the below steps if you have sensitive skin:
- Keep Petal clean by wiping it with a skin-safe antibacterial wipe as needed.
- Keep Petal dry by patting it down with a soft cloth after workouts or heavy sweating.
- Wear Petal a maximum of 6 hours per day with first wear.
- If any skin sensitivity occurs, stop wearing Petal and contact a healthcare professional.
- The sensors need good contact with your skin, so pair Petal with any close-fitting support garment- a bra, bralette, sports bra, or a top with a built-in bra.
- Whatever you choose, a snugger fit means better readings.
- No. While Petal is safe to wear, we don't recommend it during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Your body naturally changes during this time, and those changes in breast tissue can make sensor readings inaccurate.
- No. Petal is not recommended if you have an implanted cardiac device, such as a pacemaker or ICD.
- If you're unsure, check with your doctor before using Petal.
- Yes. Your heart and activity metrics will work just fine. Body composition readings, however, may be less accurate.
