Frequently Asked Questions
How Petal Works
Petal has eight advanced, clinical-grade bio-impedance analysis (BIA) sensors. This low-power technology safely measures your body's unique electrical resistance to gather data. These sensors are non-intrusive, produce no harmful radiation, and are completely safe. They use the same technology found in high-end smart scales.
Petal's sensors collect data at the source of origination for greater accuracy — right at the locations of heart, breast, and thorax.
Precision Heart Metrics
- Petal measures ECG/EKG with accuracy verified against FDA-approved devices, providing highly reliable heart rate and HRV data to monitor fitness level and overall health.
- Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women in the US, yet symptoms often present differently in women — particularly during perimenopause and menopause when hormonal changes can affect heart health. Petal provides tailored insights to monitor cardiovascular wellness through every stage of life.
Body Composition
- Breast tissue is made of adipose (fat) tissue, which Petal's sensors can measure to understand midsection and visceral fat percentages. This allows you to mitigate metabolic health risks and inform sustainable, data-driven lifestyle changes and fitness goals.
- Monitoring and reducing visceral fat — the fat surrounding internal organs — can help with long-term wellness and disease prevention, especially post-menopause.
Petal is the first wearable built for women's physiology, using the breast as a bio-marker for health data.
- Petal's unique form factor is comfortable for anytime wear, as it is fully discreet and invisible to others.
- Petal measures at the source of data origination for greater accuracy — right at the locations of heart, breast, and thorax — rather than a distant extremity like a finger or wrist.
- No. We recommend that you wear Petal while you are awake. For most women, this is the time of day that they already wear a bra.
Safety
Petal is medically safe and has clinical standards defined by our medical leadership team of Dr. Salgaonkar (Head of Clinical R&D) and Dr. Prionas (Chief Medical Officer) who collectively have extensive experience with interventional cardiology, cardiac imaging, and breast radiation oncology.
Petal uses advanced, medical-grade bio-impedance sensors — the same safe, non-radiative technology trusted by medical professionals in clinical devices and BMI scales, operating at significantly less power. Petal uses fabrics crafted with premium, biocompatible materials meeting OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100.
- No. Petal functions entirely without Wi-Fi or cellular radios, meaning it is free of the high-power radio frequency emissions found in many other wearables. It operates using low-power sensing technology that is completely free of ionizing radiation.
- Yes. Petal uses Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE), one of the safest wireless technologies available, for seamless communication with the Petal app. It operates at an incredibly low power level — significantly lower than typical smartwatches and fitness trackers.
The Bluetooth® word mark and logos are registered trademarks owned by Bluetooth SIG, Inc. and any use of such marks by Petal is under license. Other trademarks and trade names are those of their respective owners.
Is Petal Right for Me?
- Petal is designed to support women 18+ looking for a discreet way to gain holistic, female focused, meaningful insights into their health and wellness today and over time.
- Yes. For the best accuracy, the sensors require snug contact with the body, so Petal is best worn with a closer-fitting bra. If a traditional bra isn't for you, a closer-fitting support top or bralette is recommended.
Petal is designed for all-day comfort using premium, biocompatible materials. Its soft European-knit fabrics and polyurethane-coated interiors meet the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, ensuring every component is tested for harmful substances and safe for prolonged skin contact.
Petal's sensors use a synthetic rubber coating that is medical grade and contains no latex. However, if you have sensitivity to plastics, please note that Petal does include plastics that may come in contact with skin.
- Keep Petal clean by wiping it with an antibacterial wipe as needed.
- Keep Petal dry by using a soft cloth to dry the device after workouts or heavy sweating.
- Limit wear to a maximum of 6 hours per day.
Should any skin sensitivity occur, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
- Yes. The electrodes need to make good contact with the body, so Petal is best worn with a closer-fitting bra.
- While Petal is safe to wear, it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as changes in the fibroglandular tissue will cause the sensor readings to be inaccurate.
- No. Petal is not recommended for use with implanted cardiac devices such as a pacemaker or ICD.
- Yes — heart and activity metrics will function correctly; however, body composition metrics may be inaccurate.
Usage
- Petal (two symmetrical thin bra inserts — sensors on the left insert only, as it's closest to the heart; the right insert is included for balance and symmetry)
- Charging cable
- Travel bag
- Clothing: wear Petal with a close-fitting top. The insert was designed to make contact with the skin and be held in place by a bra.
- Orientation: align the bottom curve of the device to the bottom curve of the bra cup. The pointed tip of the device should align with the bra strap.
- No. For accurate readings, the Petal must be placed directly against your skin, between your breast and the bra. Placing it inside a fabric pocket will block the sensors.
- We recommend wearing Petal 5 days per week for around 4 hours a day. Consistent daily wear allows Petal to better understand your body's natural fluctuations, identify long-term trends, and provide more personalized insights. Whether you wear Petal every day or just during workouts, you'll still receive accurate snapshots of your health metrics whenever you choose to wear it.
- Yes. Petal is water-resistant and will withstand sweat, but it cannot be soaked or fully submerged in water.
- Petal can be cleaned with any antibacterial wipe safe for use on the skin.
- Roughly 14 days if you wear Petal 5 days/week for 6 hours per day. Petal recharges completely in under 2 hours via the included USB cord.
- Replacement cords will be available for purchase on our website shortly after Petal begins to ship.

- Petal is a wellness device and does not replace emergency medical care.
HSA/FSA
Add your items to cart, then select Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA at checkout. Enter your debit card details and complete the transaction as normal. If this option isn't visible, make sure you're checking out as a guest rather than through Shop Pay.
You can still select Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA as your payment method and enter a credit card instead. Flex will email you an itemized receipt for reimbursement submission.
Petal has partnered with Flex to enable HSA/FSA debit card purchases using pre-tax dollars, potentially saving you 30–40% depending on your tax bracket.
Make sure you're logged out of Shop Pay. Try checking out in an incognito window.
The most common reason is insufficient funds. Contact your HSA/FSA administrator to confirm your account balance.
Please forward us the request from your FSA, and we will work with the Flex team to issue you a new receipt.
Please check your spam folder, as emails from notifications@withflex.com may sometimes be filtered automatically. If you still can't find it, email support@withflex.com with the email address associated with your order.
Using multiple HSA/FSA cards in a single transaction is not currently supported. If your balance is insufficient, you can use a credit card instead and submit for reimbursement.
Thanks for reaching out, and apologies for the discrepancy. We'll review the charges and get back to you with details of the likely refund shortly.
